Student Adjustment to Hybrid Learning

Participant Information Sheet

To What Extent Do The Big Five Personality Traits Facilitate Student Adjustment To Hybrid Learning As a Result of the Covid-19 Pandemic

You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please ask me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to investigate how certain personality traits may have helped students to adjust to hybrid learning. The study will assess your levels of each of the “Big Five” personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. You will then be asked to answer some questions which will tell us about your experience of moving to hybrid-learning, including about your wellbeing, your engagement with your course, and how motivated you feel in university. The overall aim is therefore to explore which personality traits, if any, facilitate student adjustment to hybrid learning.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been chosen to take part in this study because you have stated that you are currently enrolled in a course which is taking a hybrid-learning approach, and you have at least one previous years’ experience of home-learning.

Do I have to take part?
No. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be asked to sign an electronic consent form. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time up to two weeks after completing the survey without giving a reason. You will create a memorable word as part of the consent process, which can be used to withdraw by emailing the researcher.

What will happen to me if I take part?
You will complete an online survey. You will be asked to select a memorable word at the beginning of the study. This will allow us to access your anonymised data in the event that you wish to withdraw your data from the study. You will then answer a number of questions about your personality, and your wellbeing, engagement, and motivation at university. The questionnaire will take around 20-25 minutes to complete.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There are no anticipated risks or disadvantages of taking part in this study. However, the survey will ask you questions about your motivation, engagement and personal wellbeing. If you feel you would be upset or distressed thinking about these topics, please consider not participating in this study.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no direct benefits of taking this study. However, you will be contributing to research on the relationship between personality and student adjustment.
