Attraction to Personality

Attraction to Personality

You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please ask me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to further understanding of how people’s personality relates to their levels of attraction to different profiles by consolidating previous research findings and by examining variables not previously considered.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been chosen to take part in this study because you have volunteered to participate.

Do I have to take part?
No. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form. Once you have submitted your completed questionnaire, you will not be able to withdraw your data.
Some of the questions in this study ask you, the participant, about personal vulnerability and relationships. This is considered to be a sensitive topic for some.

What will happen to me if I take part?
Participants will first be presented with an information sheet that will overview the topic. Next, a consent form will we required to be filled in and signed by the participant prior to proceeding with the main study. Then, basic participant information will be collected, including age, sex, and relationship status. In the main body of the study, participants will be required to complete two self-scoring personality scales: the ECR-R (Fraley et al., 2000), and the PVS (Sinclair & Wallston, 1999). Finally, participants will be presented with 24 personality profiles and asked to score their attraction to them either romantically or platonically. This study should take 25 - 30 minutes to complete, and will only be completed once per participant. Once completed, participants will be presented with the debrief sheet. Once the completed questionnaire has been submitted, the data is committed to the study and cannot be withdrawn.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There are no risks or disadvantages of taking part in this study.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
Benefits of taking part in this study include furthering understanding of human attraction to dark personality, when considering facets that haven’t been previously investigated in this context.
