A Not So Beautiful Mind: The Link between Mental Health, Personality and Television Viewing Habits
You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please email me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.
What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to investigate mental health, personality and TV viewing habits. Recent research has signified that movies and television series’ can have a crucial impact on an individual’s mental state. This has included clinical diagnoses of mental health conditions as a result of the entertainment seen on television (Araujo et al, 2019). However, to date, no research has examined personality and mental health simultaneously. Thus, the current study aims to expand the understanding of the relationship between an individual’s mental state, their personality and preference in television.
Why have I been chosen?
You have been chosen to take part in this study because you are 18 years or older.
Do I have to take part?
It is up to you if you decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part, you will be asked to provide consent. You are free to withdraw any time during the study. After completion, you are able to withdraw up to one week after the submission date. Unfortunately, after this period the data will be analysed, and you will be unable to be withdrawn. To withdraw please email the researcher with the code word you choose at the start of the questionnaire.
What will happen to me if I take part?
If you decide to take part in this study, you will have the opportunity to email any questions that may arise prior to providing consent. After confirming you have understood the information received, you will be asked to complete optional confidential demographic questions including age, gender and preferred viewing platforms. You will be asked to complete five short questionnaires involving tv viewing, mental health, personality traits and ranking your favourite TV genre’s in line with your preferences. The overall study should take no longer than 25 minutes. Upon completion you will be fully debriefed.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There are no disadvantages or risks associated with taking part in this study. However, we would like to reiterate that the questionnaires will discuss both mental health and personality traits.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
Your participation will be very much appreciated, but there are no rewards or benefits for taking part.
