Participant Information Sheet

Comparing Parent and Teacher Perspectives of the Wellbeing of Children with ADHD: A Mixed Methods Study.
You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please ask me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to investigate the wellbeing of children with ADHD, from the perspectives of their parents and teachers. This is to be able to further understand the way ADHD may affect children from the perspectives of people who are close to them and are able to have a deeper understanding of both their social and physical functioning. The study will then contrast these perspectives, to be able to further investigate if they have different views of the child's wellbeing in regard to their ADHD diagnosis, and what these differences may be to be able to further investigate this through interviews.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been chosen to take part in this study because you are either a teacher or a parent in Scotland with students or children who are in either primary or secondary school who are diagnosed with ADHD.

Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw while completing the questionnaire and following its submission you are able to withdraw within a week.

What will I do if I take part?
You will be asked a variety of questions relating to your experiences and relationship with children with ADHD, regarding their wellbeing including physical, social and psychological factors. You will be asked basic demographic information on their age and gender as well as questions surrounding their diagnosis such as age of diagnosis, maternal level of education, and number of siblings. The survey will be approximately 20 minutes in length and will be accessed through an online link. This can be done at any time and will require internet access. There will be further interviews held on the basis of the questionnaires, generally between 30 and 60 minutes in length, and you will be contacted to be let know if you have been selected for this.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
It is not expected that your participation in this study will cause any distress. However, we recognise that reflecting on a child’s wellbeing, especially in relation to their ADHD diagnosis could present negative feelings and you will be provided with contact details for The Samaritans and ADHD Scotland.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
Although there are no direct advantages in taking part, you will be providing valuable data on an important research topic, helping with a dissertation project and may learn more about the research topic.
