The communication gap experienced by Deaf individuals contributes significantly to social isolation and related mental health challenges. British Sign Language (BSL) is a complete visual language with its own grammar and structure, distinct from English. Many Deaf BSL users, especially those who are pre-lingually Deaf, do not consider written English their first language. It can be cognitively demanding and unnatural to use, rendering traditional solutions like subtitles insufficient.
To address this barrier, the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) will support the company in the development of a two-way translation application between BSL and spoken English.
The collaboration will follow the early phases of product concept development, focusing on user needs analysis. Deaf BSL users will be involved directly in shaping the direction of the application by identifying the most valuable features and user experiences. Design fiction techniques will be used to help participants visualise the future product and offer practical input.
As a participant you will be interviewed by the researcher. The interview will focus on your experiences with communication and your thoughts on design considerations and features for developing a two-way translation application between BSL and spoken English
